EXPLOSIVE!!! Bill Seeking To Make Sharia A Federal Law Quietly Passes 2nd Reading

As written by Osita Ike, a social commentator....

I was shocked to watch the live proceedings of the House of Representatives as covered by NTA2 and saw that the bill calling for the criminal aspects of Islamic Sharia law to be implemented in our legal system in Nigeria at the Federal and states passed the second reading on Thursday, October 28, 2016.

I was even more shocked because even though there were many Christians in the House no one raised an objection! The Speaker of the House, Hon Yakubu Dogara, who presided over the proceedings said that what this meant was that it would now move to committee level where it will be discussed fully before the House would decide on it finally, but it is curious that not even one voice of dissent was aired against it!

I waited till 9pm to hear what NTA Network news would report about it, but there was a blackout of reportage about it! Of course, other issues discussed and decided in the House on same day were reported but not this one!

The bill to amend the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to make provision for the full implementation of Sharia Criminal law at the federal and states legal system has passed the second reading in the House of Representatives and no one is telling Nigerians what is happening!

For all we know, when a bill passes the second reading unchallenged in parliament it is almost as good as passed. Long before the 2nd Republic, Muslim leaders in Nigeria have always agitated for the full implementation of Sharia in Nigeria.

Nobody has forgotten the hot debates that took place in the Constituent Assembly of 1978 about the place of Sharia in the 1979 Constitution. Christian members kicked against the full implementation of full Sharia because non- Muslims would fall victim of this law. In the end, a compromise was reached that the Sharia Personal Law be allowed, not the criminal aspects.

The same thing that happened in 1988 Constituent Assembly that produced the 1989 Constitution, which never took off. In fact, in the 1988 Constituent Assembly, General Ibrahim Babangida, then Nigeria’s self-styled military president, had to stop all debates relating to Sharia and other sensitive issues when he saw how inflammable the debates were becoming, and retained the status quo.

The 1999 Constitution drew much from both the 1979 and 1989 Constitutions and retained Sharia Personal law. Now, Muslims, under President Muhammadu Buhari have surreptitiously attempted to amend the Constitution to insert the full implementation of Sharia without carrying Nigerians along! Muslim leaders have always argued that Sharia law is meant for Muslims only.

But Christians have always refused to buy the argument because in practice, non-Muslims have often been dragged before Sharia courts and have been adjudicated by a legal system repugnant to their faith. Several documented cases abound to prove this.

Besides, Christians have always argued why the government that is supposed to be neutral to all religions should uphold the religious laws of one religion with public funds to the harm of the adherents of other faiths.

These are some of the issues that make some of us to take with a pinch of salt the claims that President Buhari means well for this country. Our job is to bring these issues to the fore to create awareness of what is happening. Whatever happens afterwards is beyond our power.

It’s up to you all. Broadcast this information and please take all steps available to you to let this be known in higher hierarchy of the church, the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN.

We must not be docile!

Osita Ike is a concerned Nigerian citizen.

[JUDICIAL CONFIDENCE]: IS JUSTICE BINTA NYAKO ALREADY A SUSPECT OF BIAS?

By Ifeanyi Chijioke

31 October, 2016

We must respect the position of the people that view Binta Nyako as a suspect of bias because Buhari played a major role in destroying the Judiciary of Nigeria to the extent there is no confidence in the system anymore. It is very sad that even before a Judge takes his seat to preside, it is already clear that he would unjustly favour one against another. The recent arrest of Judges that have not unjustly given judgments that would favour Buhari makes it clearer that any Judge appointed must dance to the beat of the Presidency or risk being arrested. Nyako doesn’t look like that kind of Judge that would stand her ground; she is already being fingered as executive stooge. I maintain that there is no smoke without fire; having fingered her of being a stooge; Nyako as a suspect of Bias is understandable.

Measuring the interest of the Presidency in the case, appointing a political ally’s wife who is from the same State makes issue more complicated. Today, the very Judge that granted Nnamdi Kanu bail runs away and avoids case files concerning the Federal Government; this reflects the extent of the pressure to make sure Judges are conformed. Binta as a suspect of bias is quite positive because some moves have been made that signaled partiality. Questions are beginning to fly here and there why the newly appointed Judge must take same date as that of the ECOWAS court which has been seen as an effort to force distraction on the community Court.

Justice Binta Nyako doesn’t quite possess the aura going by her records; she seemed to have favoured the Federal Government in certain cases and going by the fact that her husband deeply supported Buhari’s Presidency, it is clear that she would only do the bidding of the President to keep the strong relationship with the President. Buhari quickly considers anybody that gives a ruling that is not in line with what he wants an enemy and it is believed that Justice Binta cannot stand the enmity or the pressure that will come out of the matter. There is a deep relationship between her family and Buhari that won’t likely be broken by given fair judgment.

Meanwhile, before the appointment of any trial Judge, it is suspected that Buhari will demand a trial Judge that would give him what he wants. Fear has been instilled, Justices are being harassed and arrested; maltreated and nothing is done about this. Out of fear, it is believed that the Justices are now dancing to the tune of the President or risk arrest and detention. Binta Nyako is a suspect of Bias because she has already issued a date that would frustrate ECOWAS court that is expected to rule without favour or fear.

Buhari has made prejudicial statements that made justice impossible in the case; Hon. Ejiofor had accused the government of Nigeria of threatening that no court would release Nnamdi Kanu until he accepts to negotiate with them. Buhari obviously said in his maiden media chat that he would not release Nnamdi Kanu notwithstanding the order of competent Court that had demanded Kanu’s unconditional release. The harassment and detention of Judges is not unconnected with the refusal of the Judges to favour the Federal Government. It is not a surprise that the Judges detained are ones that have justly given judgments without fear and favour. Binta Nyako as a suspect of bias can be proven by the words Buhari has said so far.

Binta Nyako as a suspect of bias can be proven because Nigeria is a country where rule of law has been murdered by the executive. The executive power seems to be more powerful than the rule of law which makes it impossible for the bench and the bar to freely operate and discharge their duties without fear or favour. It is believed that once a trial Judge goes against the wish of the executive; he or she is taken up and sufficiently dealt with because the law cannot protect them.

By virtue of all these; Binta Nyako as a suspect of Bias is quite understandable.

$30billion Loan Will Jeopardise Destiny Of Future Generations - Falana Tells FG

Femi Falana, human rights activist and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has called on the federal government to shelve its plan to borrow $29.960 billion to execute key projects across the country.

He said the government would be putting the collective destiny of the younger generation in jeopardy should be loan be secured.

President Muhammadu Buhari recently sought the approval of the National Assembly to borrow the said loan from the World Bank.

Falana, while speaking at the 2016 annual general conference of Committee for Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) in Lagos on Saturday, urged the federal government to source for funds locally.

The lawyer, who’s a former president of CDHR, said the government should use recovered loot and go after chronic debtors to fund its projects.

He said: “We hear that the federal government wants to borrow $29 billion to fund the economy, my advice is we do not need to do this at such a period in our economy.

“What about the millions of the recovered loots from those who stole our money, our money that are in the hands of those who decided to steal from the treasury?

“I have a report from Nigeria Extractive Transparency Initiative, NEITI which states that the oil companies and NNPC are owing the federal government a joint $20.2b.

“All these should be recovered and used for these projects instead of putting the destiny of the younger generation and those to come in jeopardy as a result of the huge national debt it will bring.”

Nigerian Student, Chinemenma Emerges UN Schools' First Female President

Nigerian Senior Secondary School student, Miss Chinemenma Emma-Ugoji, has emerged the first female President of the General Assembly of Nigerian International Secondary Schools Model United Nations (NISSMUN).

The student of Premier Academy, Lugbe in Abuja, was elected at the 12th edition of NISSMUN annual conference. The conference held at the International Conference Centre in Abuja from Oct. 22nd to Oct. 26th, 2016.

Ten candidates contested for the position and close to 1,000 students drawn from International Schools across the country attended the conference. The conference which had the theme: “Engaging Youths in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)’’ was organized by the Nigerian Model United Nations Society which has been conducting NISSMUN conferences since 2005.

Commenting after her victory, Chinemenma said: “I wanted to be the first girl to occupy the position and I want to play a leading role in efforts to prove that young people have something to offer in terms of achieving the SDGs.’’

“Contesting for the position was interesting because we were asked general questions about the UN, its General Assembly and the organization’s rules and procedures before we were asked to present individual manifesto,” she said.

Chinemenma who represented Belgium in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) committee at the conference, said that the pieces of experience she garnered during deliberations have given her the hunch to study Maritime Law in the University.

She added that her target is to study at the American University of Nigeria AUN. She said that the Leadership training conducted during the conference has emboldened her to take on issues of SDGs with more confidence.

“ I even walked bare feet while presenting my manifesto because I had to remove my high heel shoes which were a bit discomforting. This is one manifestation of confidence,’’ she said.

“Bringing schools from all over Nigeria to come together to understand the ways of the UN in making decisions, especially the 17 SDGs is so rewarding.” “The 36 committees and the designation of delegates as representative of member countries of the UN brought out the best in them,’’ she said.

On how young people could contribute to the achievement of the SGDs, she said that young people have ideas on what is peculiar to their generation and they can talk about those issues and proffer solutions to their problems.

She reasoned that since the SDGs were aimed at transforming the world into a better place, young people are critical in taking decisions on the goals since they are the ultimate beneficiaries.

There is a Heavy tension in the ongoing dialogue between the Federal Government and Niger Delta militants through the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF).

Igbo Leaders Finally Back Nnamdi Kanu, Say Biafran Agitators No Threat To National Security

Prominent Igbo leaders yesterday rose from a three- day World Summit and declared categorically that Biafran agitators constitute no threat to national security.

In a 10-point communiqué presented at Igbo Renaissance Centre, Gregory University, Uturu in Abia State, and signed by Gen. Ike Nwachukwu, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, Col. Joe Achuzie, Dr. Greg Ibeh, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu , Prof. George Obiozor and two others, the Igbo leaders said Igbo people have made the biggest sacrifice and contribution to the building of modern Nigeria.

The Igbo leaders called on the Federal Government to promptly release Nnamdi Kanu and other prisoners of conscience in line with the rule of law.

They insisted that henceforth, the Igbo will work for a nation where they are allowed to live and operate as equal citizens without discrimination or intimidation.

While calling for a regional autonomy, the Igbo leaders demanded the repealing of the 1999 Constitution and enacting of a new one that will recognise the inalienable right of each constituent group to self- determination and regional autonomy as enshrined in the 1960 Independence and 1963 Republican Constitutions.

The summit described the herdsmen’ menace as “present and imminent danger to peace and security in Igboland” and called on Igbo governors and state Assemblies to immediately legislate against any form of grazing in Igboland.

The summit also resolved that henceforth, Igbo political leadership, both elected and appointed must act in the best interest of Ndigbo and be prepared to be held accountable by the people for all their actions and inactions.

Earlier, during the opening of the World Igbo Summit, the Director General, Dr. Ifedi Okwenna said the summit was organised to bring together great minds of Igbo land from across the globe to dialogue and present a strategic roadmap for growth and development going forward to herald the 50-year visioning project for the Igbo nation.

Prof George Obiozor, in a remark noted: “Over 40 years of mourning in the Nigerian wilderness is over. We must stop begging to belong to Nigeria, a country our leaders and our people built. Let us learn from the lessons of history that those neglected cannot and should not neglect themselves.”

General Ike Nwachukwu (retd) in his comment said Ndigbo can no longer accept any form of subjugation or becoming a footstool for anybody or region.

Other prominent Igbo that attended the summit included Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, Prof. Pat Utomi, Prof Ephipany Azinge, Joe Irukwu , Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa, Iyom Josephine Anenih among others.

Meanwhile, youths from the core Niger Delta states under the aegis of Afra Descendants Movement (ADM) have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to, as a matter of urgency release the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPO, Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally. They said the president has a moral burden in continuing to incarcerate Kanu.

Speaking after a one day meeting at Ikot Abasi in Akwa Ibom State, the leader of ADM, Apostle Lanada M. Jene said it was morally wrong for anybody who had participated in a coup or was a beneficiary of a coup plot which is a treasonable offence to continue to incarcerate Kanu over a purported treasonable felony.

The ADM leader said whether the Federal Government releases the IPOB leader or not, the greatest thing they could hand over to Kanu was to continue to fight until Biafra was actualised.

He stressed that for this to be done, his members have decided to be mentally prepared for the victimisation that would come from the Nigerian government, stating that in so doing, it would be illogical for him to start speculating on what to do next if Nnamdi was not released, but emphasised on the commitment to ensuring that Biafra was actualised.
