In Desperate Cover-Up, Nigerian Army Claims "39" Not 83 Soldiers Missing After Boko Haram Attack

In a desperate cover-up of its handling of the 83 missing soldiers after a Boko Haram attack, two senior officers of the Nigerian Army have given uncoordinated statements on the attack.

While the man who officially speaks for the Nigerian Army claimed the army could not release true figures of the missing soldiers, a major general several hundred kilometres away said only “39” soldiers are missing.

One of Nigeria's leading newspapers, Premium Times had reported how 83 Nigerian soldiers, including a commanding officer, went missing after a major attack by insurgents.

Several of the soldiers, who fled their station due to the superior firepower of the terrorists, were later feared dead from drowning in the River Yobe.

On Wednesday, at two different interactions with the media, Army spokesman Sani Usman, and Lucky Irabor, the Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole in the north-east, issued the different statements to reporters about the number of missing troops.

While Mr. Usman, a colonel, told an online news platform, Pulse Nigeria, that the Army won’t disclose the number of missing soldiers, Mr. Irabor told reporters in Maiduguri that 39 soldiers were missing.

In his interview, Mr. Usman told Pulse Nigeria that the Army issued a statement after the attack, but did not give the number of missing troops.

“We issued a statement of what happened. We did not mention the number of soldiers that were missing.

“Eventually, we went to the theatre of war. But they didn’t bother to ask us that we should tell them the number of soldiers that were missing,” Mr. Usman said.

Despite being pressed about the specific number of those missing, Mr. Usman remained elusive. Apart from deflecting questions, Mr. Usman also charged this newspaper to justify the missing persons — completely absorbing the Army of the responsibility to give names and figures of the missing uniformed men.

“Yeah, but the figures Premium Times reeled out are outrageous and not correct. I tried to make them understand that look, all you have to do is ask for information, not speculate, not say that everybody is a criminal because that is the way it looks like,” Mr. Usman said. “I declined to comment on the number Premium Times gave so that wherever they got that information, they should go and justify it.”

On his part, Mr. Irabor was quoted by the News Agency of Nigeria as saying that the Army declared 39 soldiers missing.

“It is true that about 39 soldiers were declared missing,” the major general said even though his statement was the first official one mentioning a figure for the missing officials.

Mr. Irabor added that some of the soldiers have returned, but declined to provide figures, NAN reported.

”I want to inform you that a sizeable number of our soldiers had returned to base,” Mr. Irabor said. “I think it is only a handful that have not been found.”

Mr. Usman had in a different interview maintained that the Army will not release the number of missing soldiers to avoid complicating rescue efforts.

Notwithstanding, Premium Times said it stands by its reports that 83 soldiers were feared missing in the attack, which also left some soldiers dead.

As with the missing, the Army had been silent on the number of dead soldiers from the attack.

On Wednesday morning, Premium Times newspaper reported that the Army had launched a probe into the Gashigar attack. A colonel who was amongst those missing had since been replaced by a captain.

The army’s refusal to come clean on the fate of the soldiers appears part of efforts to manipulate information to the public on the happenings in the north-east.

In December 2015, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, asked the media to consider “national interests” when reporting Boko Haram attacks, a euphemism used by many governments to seek suppression of unfavourable stories.

“Acting in the national interest means not playing up reports of cowardly Boko Haram attacks on soft targets,” Mr. Mohammed said during a press briefing on Christmas Eve.

Also, following Premium Times' exclusive report last Saturday about how soldiers were enduring months of unpaid salaries and their allowances also being held by their superiors, the Army hurriedly began paying them that same weekend.

Presently, family members of soldiers stationed at Gashigar are getting increasingly agitated because they haven’t been able to contact their loved ones.

Oriental Times gathered that telecom signals in the area have been put off, making it difficult for family members to confirm whether their loved ones were amongst those missing.

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday fixed December 7 to hear a suit by ex-First Lady, Patience Jonathan, against the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, seeking to unfreeze her account.

Apart from the EFCC, other respondents are Skye Bank and a former Special Assistant to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Waripama-Owei Dudafa.

Also joined in the suit are Pluto Property and Investment company Ltd, Seagate Property Development and Investment Company Ltd, Transocean Property and Investment Company Ltd and Globus Integrated Service Ltd.

The ex-first lady is demanding $200 million from the commission as damages for infringing on her rights.

She is also urging the court to issue an order discharging the freezing order and restraining the EFCC and its agent from further placing a freezing order on the said accounts.

When the case was called on Wednesday, Rotimi Oyedepo, announced appearance for the EFCC, while Granville Abibo appeared for Mrs. Jonathan.

Addressing the court, Mr. Oyedepo informed the judge that the case was coming up for the first time, adding that some of the respondents had yet to be served with the court’s processes.

He said the case was not yet “ripe for hearing”, having been served with the processes on October 19 and is yet to file a response.His submission was, however, not contested by counsel to the plaintiff.

Consequently, Justice Babs Kuewumi fixed December 7 for hearing.

In an affidavit in support deposed to by Sammie Somiari, a lawyer, he averred that on March 22, 2010, she (Jonathan) had opened five different accounts with Skye Bank with the assistance of one Damola Bolodeoku and Dipo Oshodi.

He averred that the account mandate forms were duly completed and signed by her.

According to him, Mrs. Jonathan subsequently discovered that apart from one of the accounts that bore her name, the other four accounts were opened in the name of four companies which were companies belonging to Dudafa.

He said she also observed that the ATM cards of the said accounts were issued in the names of the companies, adding that she complained to Dudafa, who promised to effect the necessary changes.

He said Dipo Oshodi also promised to effect the necessary changes.

Mr. Somiari averred that Mrs. Jonathan is not a director, shareholder or participant in these companies and the funds in the said accounts were solely owned and operated by her.

“Dudafa does not own any part of the funds in the said accounts.”

According to the deponent, the Skye Bank official (Mr. Oshodi) did not effect the instructions of the plaintiff to change the name of the said accounts to her name, in spite of repeated request.

He stated that notwithstanding the refusal of the bank to effect the necessary changes, she had been using the said ATM cards without any interference.

The deponent averred that sometime in July, Mrs. Jonathan discovered that the ATM cards were not functioning, and immediately contacted the bank, who informed her that a “No debit/freezing order” had been placed on the accounts.

“On further enquiry, the bank informed her that the accounts were frozen on the directive of EFCC as a result of ongoing investigation in relation to Mr. Dudafa.”

Jonathan, therefore, contended that she was never arrested or invited by the EFCC prior to the freezing order placed on the accounts.

She further contends that the freezing order on her funds on the directive of EFCC without an order of the court is unlawful and illegal.

Consequently, Mrs. Jonathan is seeking an order of court, directing the unfreezing of her account forthwith and also wants an order restraining the EFCC from taking further steps in relation to the said account pending the determination of the suit.

Korean Military To Assist Nigeria Defeat Boko Haram

The leader of military delegation from the Democratic Republic of Korea, Major General YO Song Chol, has commended the Nigerian Armed Forces for its exceptional roles in regional and global peacekeeping operations, which has accorded Nigerian Military positive image in the comity of global Armed Forces.

He also eulogized Nigerian military’s professional competence that was leading to the defeat of the deadly Boko Haram terrorists in the North Eastern part of Nigeria.

Major General Song Chol gave the commendation when he led a group of senior military officers from the Korean Defence Ministry to the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin at the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) Abuja on Wednesday.

The Korean General expressed his country’s willingness to partner with Nigerian Armed Forces in the area of counter insurgency training and capacity building for enhancing national defence capability aimed at total eradication of extremists in the West African Sub-Region.

Major General Song Chol noted that the world is currently witnessing series of security threats from radical groups such as Boko Haram, ISIS and Al-Shabab, noting that the Korean Armed Forces has been collaborating and cooperating with other countries to fight the common enemies.

Other areas for mutual benefit hinges on the need for transfer of technology including building of military industrial complexes.

While welcoming the Korean delegation, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olonisakin assured the Korean Senior military officers of the determination of the Nigerian Armed Forces to partner with any country of the world that share the same ideology and aspiration to fight extremism and terrorism in order to engender global peace and tranquillity.

Carson called this the most important election of our lifetime. He warned Christians that they’re facing an “all out attack” on Christianity. America will be a Communist country if it falls to the rule of Hillary Clinton.

“Laws are being passed both here and around the globe that continue to erode our rights to share the Gospel, and to live our lives according to the Bible. Courts are now ruling that laws that have protected our churches and businesses for decades are unconstitutional.” he said.

In 2012 , 25 million people of faith failed to vote in the presidential election. We can’t afford to have that happen again.

“If God didn’t want us to get involved in politics, then He wouldn’t have given us the brain or the reasoning ability,”

Carson went on to warn Christians that staying home will be disastrous for the country.

“when you don’t vote, you’re voting.”

Carson is asking Americans to go to the My Faith Votes website, where people can pledge to get informed about their choices in the elections; to pray faithfully for America; and to vote from a ‘biblical worldview.’

This is a historic election and we need to unite now more than ever. If Hillary becomes president in November, may God help us all.

The chain begins with Clinton and senior policy adviser Ann O’Leary, titled, “Memo on Cadillac Tax for HRC.” Surprise, surprise, Clinton said she is open to changing her position on the Cadillac Tax, noting her desire to see the ACA destroyed almost as an afterthought:

“Given the politics now w bipartisan support including Schumer, I’ll support repeal w ‘send of the Senate’ that revenues would have to be found,” Clinton wrote. “I’d be open to a wide range of options to do that, but we have to be careful that the R version passes, which begins the unravelling of the ACA.”

Of course, given the lip service Hillary Clinton paid to the theme of the ACA on the campaign trail, it would definitely raise some eyebrows how she feels about it in private. Apparently, Clinton only claimed to be in support of it just to get votes.

Moreover, Clinton wouldn’t be able to achieve her goals of single-payer without the complete collapse of Obamacare. Get ready for much, much higher taxes if Clinton is elected president!

Americans are facing skyrocketing costs for healthcare, and they continue to go up. A single-payer system is not the answer, but don’t tell that to Hillary Clinton. Her plan has always been the same.

Clinton is just quietly biding her time until the opportunity presents itself to push this ideology on the American people. She will do it when the stakes for the entire health system are at their highest.

The first time Clinton tried this was in 1993 when her husband put her in charge of healthcare reform. Her health plan was dubbed “Hillary Care” by its detractors, and it was met with stiff opposition.

Even if Hillary is elected, all is not lost, however. There is one thing that will stop her dead in her tracks, and that is your vote. Your support of GOP representatives and senators will have an important effect on Clinton.

It will stop her dead in her tracks yet again. Socialized medicine will not be able to take effect and ruin this country.

A letter signed by 88 former military leaders, including four 4-star generals, endorsed Donald Trump, saying that the Republican nominee “has the temperament to be commander in chief.”

According to the BBC, the open letter was released Tuesday, just one day before Trump and Democrat rival Hillary Clinton were scheduled to appear back-to-back in a forum on national security and veterans’ issues in New York City.

In the open letter, the retired military leaders said that Trump was “more trusted to be commander in chief than Hillary Clinton” because of significant changes that had to be made to improve the U.S. military and international security.

“We believe that such a change can only be made by someone who has not been deeply involved with, and substantially responsible for, the hollowing out of our military and the burgeoning threats facing our country around the world,” they added.

Trump responded to the letter, saying that it was “a great honor” for his campaign.

While Trump has made veterans issues and the restoration of America’s military strength and prestige a main campaign issue, most media commentators seemed to intimate that the military wouldn’t support Trump. They pointed to his support for enhanced interrogation techniques and hard line on the Islamic State group, as well as the usual charge that Trump was “erratic,” as reasons why he couldn’t command the respect of the military.

This seemed to disregard the fact that Hillary Clinton’s inattention to the “JV team” led to the rapid growth of the Islamic State group, that her mishandling of classified information put American lives at risk (something typically frowned upon by military brass, if you hadn’t guessed), and that her tenure at the State Department saw the disintegration of American prestige abroad at an unprecedented scale.

These 88 retired military leaders have just made sure that the media establishment knows what they refuse to report on — that Donald Trump is likely a better military leader than Hillary Clinton.

At the very least, by practically any measure, he couldn’t be much worse.
